MACOUPIN COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL ISSUES SPRING REMINDERS
Macoupin County Animal Control and Adoption Center would like to remind the residents of the county of a few important laws and rules concerning your animals in the county. These rules also apply in any municipal jurisdiction.
ALL animals (cats and dogs) are required by state law to be rabies vaccinated once they reach the age of four months and they are also required to be registered with the county. The fee for a rabies tag is $10 for an animal that is spayed/neutered and $25 for an animal that is unaltered. Animals are then required to do this each and every year.
All dogs and cats must remain on their owner’s property and under their control at all times. No dog or cat may cause a nuisance by excessive barking, caterwauling or other noisemaking; damaging property, chasing vehicles; attacking, chasing or interfering with people or domestic animals.
NO person may abandon any dog or cat. Any female dog or cat in heat must be confined within a secure enclosure (garage, shed or house not fenced yard or kennel) ALL animal bites must be reported to animal control within 24 hours. Animals which have bitten must be quarantined for a period of 10 days by state statue. Then the animal must comply with a post bite exam also required by the state. The owner of any animal must provide proper shelter (shelter consist of a top, bottom and four sides) to protect the animal from the elements, food and clean fresh water. Owners must also provide vet care.
Please make sure your animals wear identification at all times. This helps if your pet does get out so we can get it back home to you.
Please don’t leave your pets in your vehicle in inclement weather. The vehicle you leave your pet in is anywhere for 20 to 40 degrees hotter inside than out and this can cause your pet to have heat related problems.
If you are wanting to report problems with animals and you live within a municipal jurisdiction, please call your local authority. If you live in the county, call 217-854-4024. If you are wanting to report abuse or neglect be sure to leave your name and contact information, anonymous calls will not be taken. The caller’s identity is kept confidential. If you have any questions regarding animal control related matters please feel free to call the animal control and leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
